Final Blog!

This is a blog on what ever i want it to be :)

This weekend i did nothing. It was one of the better weekends i have had in a while. My boyfriend came down from Chicago to see me and we literally sat in bed and watched movies all weekend. He came down late friday so we didn't get to do a lot so going to bed early and sleeping in late was the plan. On Saturday, however, we went to see the recent Harry Potter movie. It was fantastic and i cannot wait till the next one comes out. Sunday wasn't eventful either. We watched football all day and i had to watch my poor Colts get beat in overtime by 3 :( but it was an exciting game. I met with my group for the group project later that night around 8 and we discussed what we wanted to do for our website. It is so far coming along well; ive never made a website before so i hope that it looks good in the end. As far as weekends go this one was pretty lazy. As you can see.

At the moment i am sitting in my physiology class listening to the most boring prof i have ever had. I am not doing all that great in this class but im kind of trying. I have all the notes for it so i just go to lecture for attendance points. Her tests in this class are crazy hard and i am very worried about the final. I have an A in the lab so im hoping that my A and my D average out to a C in the end so i can at least get credit for this class. If i dont, then ill have to take it over again....ugh.

For the rest of this week i will be going to the last of my classes for the semester just like everyone else and i will be trying to study as much as i can. This upcoming weekend i am going to a Christmas party back at home for my summer job, with my boyfriend. Its formal and at a dinner hall so im really looking forward to it. After this weekend i only have 3 finals to take and ill be going home for Christmas the wednesday of finals week!! :D

I am really glad this blog was on whatever i wanted because i am so freeking bored in this class and i have nothing else to talk about on this blog. I doubt ill keep a blog ever again but it was a learning experience to have one. I think im about done for this though.

Happy Holidays!

the other 2 articles

ok so i just got home from chicago, its 1am, and im exhausted from a 3hr drive so bare with me on this post.

I started off with the article by Price. She starts off by going through scenarios of plagiarism and why and how people do it. Being a teacher, she goes through how she has changed her methods of teaching about plagiarism. I feel that she goes through a lot of what i already know about plagiarism like; how to write in my own words and giving appropriate credit to the author of another piece of work i might be using in another paper. I liked how she incorporated her main points in some of her pages with larger printed side texts in the paragraphs. It emphasized what she really wanted to get out to the readers. This is an extremely long article and i did not get all of it done. But i do understand her main points.

Then the article by Zwagerman is again about plagiarism. He begins by saying it is a rhetorical analysis. I liked how he talked about internet plagiarism and how we now like to cut and paste what we read on line into our papers but this is still considered plagiarism if not cited correctly. This author, like the last, went into the teacher's point of view on plagiarism and how it affects the learning and teaching in the schools today. The way his paper is set up allows the reader to flow with his ideas smoothly. And i feel that his point is clearly made with each paragraph. As with the last i did not finish because it is now 1:11am and the computer screen is looking quite blurry at the moment. This paper did make sense, however, and i again fully understand the act of plagiarism is very wrong and should be avoided at all costs.

Goooooood night :)

Rebecca Moore Howard article

Ok. This article is about plagiarism. The author basically touches on the major points of plagiarism and how people continue to do this. In the beginning paragraph she identifies two main ways people plagiarize; because of having no ethics or simply by accident. I feel that more often it is done by accident. When we have to write these huge research papers for classes it is common to overlook simple errors like this. I really think that the person that has the guts to actually copy someone else's work and call it their own is just ridiculous. Just write your own work.
Near the end of the paper it gives advice for students and faculty. I like how she did this by giving lots of options and resources for both the student and teacher. It gives a better way to help write a paper with sources without having to plagiarize.
I liked how she referenced quite a lot of other authors in her text to help prove her point about this topic. The article continues on to explain patchwriting, positive plagiarism, and policies helping to prove of the academic dishonesty of plagiarism. I have read many things about plagiarism so i did not finish the whole article. But it did have a lot of good main points and views about plagiarism.

page 175 questions

Question #1:
The research question that i am trying to answer is; how do dogs influence humans psychologically and how are dogs behaviorisms and temperament affecting this? I am basically trying to find links that help people and dogs. The psychology, the training, the handling behind having a dog around and in peoples' lives.

Question #2:
The reason that i chose this issue is because i am an avid dog lover. I own a dog myself and i believe that dogs have a huge impact on people. I wanted to better understand how dogs help people and how we can help then in return. I am using my own dog as an example in my paper to add a personal experience and touch that will emphasize my point even further.

Question #3:
The audience that i am writing to are not only dog owners but, scientists, psychologists, teachers, Stephanie :), dog show judges, trainers, breeders, and anyone with any interest in dogs.

Question #4:
As previously stated, i fit into the context with my own dog. I added this aspect in the middle of the paper to tie in many of my arguments. I use my dog as an example of my experiences in training, temperament, and what to do and what not to do. I am hoping to add this to better tie everything in and make my dog a way for readers to relate to my paper as well.

Question #5:
In questions 2 and 4 they overlap by my example of my dog and in some in questions 1 and 2 with my reasonings for writing the paper. It will further focus my topic by giving me a better pin-pointed topic to focus on.

chapters 8 and 12

Sooo i cannot remember if we were supposed to do ch 12 but here it goes anyways. And i am doing this early so i dont forget to do it later. Because i will forget to do this.

Alright ch 8, understanding plagiarism and integrating resources. Oh boy, more on plagiarism. Plagiarism is just not my thing. I have been learning how not to do it since i was in grade school. I know how to cite everything that i dont write and when i cite i make it blatantly obvious that it was someone else that wrote what i wanted to say. This is a long chapter, i have to say. It goes into detail on reviewing your research, which we have talked about in class. The example paper given, however, is somewhat useful. It gives a layout of a correct paper and highlights the major points that make it a good paper.

Chapter 12, MLA citation and guidelines. I am not going to lie, this was a very quick read for me because all this chapter is, is a reference for examples on how to write many different citations for many different kinds of sources. All this chapter is useful for is if I needed a good example for a source like a book, website, one and two authors, letters, journals, etc... It is useful and probably the most useful part of this entire book in my opinion.

And there you have it :) chapters that i think we were supposed to read and i have them done early!!

research paper articles

Alright, the research paper articles i chose to read were the Marveling Comic one and the Wikipedia article. Being that I usually wait till the last min to do this and that i am terrible at remembering to do this blogging stuff...here it goes.

My boyfriend loves comics. I have never read them but have always been a big fan of the Marvel and DC comic movies based on the original comics. I have recently had a new found respect for comics because of my boyfriend though. This article talks about comics, obviously, and their history and how they play a role as literacy. I like how this article is set up in that the citations are obvious and when they used a large quote that was important to the structure of the paper, it was indented into the paragraph. I would have never thought to do it like that. I also like the use of dialog in one part of the article. It gives it more of a real feeling, like someone is telling about this topic to your face rather than writing about it to inform.

The second article i read was the Wikipedia article. The intro to the article explains clearly what they will be observing in this article. I often use Wikipedia to begin a search just to get some basic info before i start a major project or paper. It is a good way to get info from the public that may or may not be accurate. This article just goes over the basic aspects of Wikipedia and how it has its faults and strengths.

Ok so i have to get working somewhat on this huge paper we have been assigned because i am a bad procrastinator and if i dont do something then ill be screwed next week when its due. So im watching A Bugs Life and working on that. Good night!!

Chapters 10 & 11

So chapter 10 is on selecting and integrating evidence. Ok, so basically this chapter is here to tell us how to evaluate our resources and how to put them in our papers. We extensively talked about in class how to find our audience and purpose and this is the very first part of the chapter so I just skimmed over it to make life simple. It then goes into how to timeline, relevance, and other aspects of a paper. I know that without relevance in a source or even a paper for that fact that it is not credible and there fore is not very useful. It talks about criteria and how it can be used to consider evidence as well. The chapter continues to review how to get proper resources as evidence and making sure you get proper sources. We have gone over this in class as well so I again skimmed. The rest of the chapter goes over evidence and is still completely boring.

Alright, now chapter 11. This chapter is over sharing the results and goes over getting the final paper together, design of the paper, and intros and conclusions. This chapter did not interest me in any sort what so ever and I dont need to read on to see how to make a concept map of ideas because i have been doing them since i was in the 2nd grade. Continuing on how to present and organize this chapter goes into great unnecessary detail. Then comes intros and conclusions. I have heard this same talk about how to catch an audience and bring them into your paper in the intro and how to sum up everything in a conclusion that i truly do not need to read this in great detail.

I didnt know what essay to read so when i find out ill blog something on it....as for now im done

Joy and catharsis

I remember growing up in Georgia with the smell of sweet sticky pine and honeysuckle in the summer time. Running barefoot as fast as I could down the steep hill of a drive way in the warm summer rain, just to splash into the puddle at the end of the drive. There was a huge rock at the end of my street that we would all climb on and pretend that we were adventurers. Behind my house there was nothing but wooded forest area with a creek and small pond about half a mile back. We would hike back there with daddy once a week just to see the flowers and smell the rushing water flowing down the rocky green mossy creek. I had a tree house, although it wasn’t in a tree, that we would play on and swing from the chain linked swing that hung, what seemed like miles, above the ground. I would run down my one way street of a neighborhood to meet up with my best friend just so we could climb the dogwood trees that grew in a row on the side of her house. Once we brought up sheets of cardboard and old towels that mom never used and made a kind of fort up there. She always took the best branches to sit on once we got to the top, and I always hated her for it. I remember swimming in Mr. Joe’s pool on the hottest days of the summer when you couldn’t go outside for 5 min and not get sun burnt. The pasta salad, grilled steak, French fries, and corn on the cob are still on my tongue.

We would swim for hours in that pool all day and late  into the night. When we would get out our fingers and toes would be so wrinkly and shriveled up that we looked like old people. I remember being so tired those nights that my sister and i had to be carried home and put into bed. Every Sunday my daddy would get up extra early just to make blueberry muffins for us. The warm, sweet smell of the muffins filled the morning air with happiness. Biting into one of them even today takes me back to when I was younger.

Chapter 9

Alright so ch 9 is about arguing. The chapter begins by stating weather you are making a report or an argument. An argument is, according to the text, interpreting, analyzing, concluding, claiming, and persuading. And the difference between that and reporting is that reporting is summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, describing, and telling. To sum it up an argument is something that persuades people to believe what you want them to believe.

Developing a thesis is the next part of the chapter and it talks about how to do this in different steps. I personally haven't really had problems developing a thesis. You just have to make sure that the information given is complex, clear, and insightful.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are mentioned in here as well. Being that we have gone over this in class and I have been using all three of these techniques since middle school I believe I have a clear understanding of how to use them in my writing.

Towards the end of the chapter it just goes into more of argument and counterarguments. I think that this chapter is another pointless chapter. I know how to do all of these things and hearing them over again is not going to help me. I can make an argument and I can make sure that my argument makes sense and is believable to others.

Chapters 6 and 7

Ch 6...
This chapter is about reading rhetorically and to be honest I only do this most of the time. I have come to the realization that reading has been ruined for me by text books. I am required to read so many of them that casual reading is just dull and bothersome to me. So as far as rhetorically reading something, it is rare. I have never done annotations in my readings. This will be the first class I have done so and it will be a learning experience for me. I have, however, summarized and paraphrased my writing and readings.

Ch 7...
This chapter was just basically how to effectively write a research paper with well thought out responses to your sources. It tells you how to keep track of your sources and how to add your own valid comments to fill the paper with information that not only makes it interesting but true.

Chapter 4

Ch4.....

So for ch 4 I truthfully just skimmed this chapter. I have been researching most everything for years now so I know my way around the internet and the library. I know where to get good and reliable information and I know where not to get it. For example, I use googlescholar.com to find most all of my beginning information for a science paper for biology or chemistry class. Then after I gather that I go straight to the library and further my findings there.

This chapter would be of no help to me what so ever because I know where to look already.

Chapter 5

So I have been very bad at keeping these blogs since i have no time to do so.

Here is ch 5...
In the beginning of the chapter it talks about observation and interviews. I think that this gives good tips and ways to do both of these. I have used some of them in actual interviews for jobs and such. Something i haven't really done is surveys. I have submitted simple ones for students and just for laughs, but never an important government survey or medical survey or something like that.
As far as this chapter goes it just is giving info about how to go about collecting data that is relevant and real. I think that i have learned how to do all of this over time and experience. However, the book does explain it well.

Text Books

I, to be honest, hate English text books. I have been reading them since I was in elementary school and they are all the same stuff over and over again. This book is the perfect example of such a book. I really didnt even read all of it. I just skimmed over most of it. It was a wonderfully relaxing weekend for me and the last thing I want to be dong right now is blogging about a book that I will most likely never open again this semester. I am waiting till the last min to even write this, while the Colts game is on.

Anyway, the book will be useful if I have a question that I just cant remember for the life of me what to do when I am stuck with my writing. It probably won't help me much considering I have been writing research papers since high school and my papers now are the most complex scientific research papers I have ever written. All in all this book is just so-so.

GO COLTS!

For the first reading that I did it was on the genetically modified foods and nanotechnology. I actually liked the first part of this reading a lot. It has to do with a lot of what my major is and I didn't know a lot about what it was talking about so it was interesting to learn about this. At first, I was all about organic foods and genetically enhanced foods, but after reading this part of the article I have mixed thoughts about it. I don't like the fact that those million dollar companies are controlling the worlds food supply down to the last seed. I think if it grows out of the earth then it shouldn't be "owned" so to speak. I found the nanotechnology part kind of scary but fascinating at the same time. That kind of technology is incredible and should be looked into further. If it can help to cure cancer, I am all for it. But the bad side affects, like the corpses in the blood stream, is a cause for concern. I wouldn't want any dead organism in my blood stream clogging up my arteries. If they were to do more research on this I think that the medical world may be on to something.

"Billy Sim" was an article comparing video games to life. He found out that he didn't pay attention to his everyday actions like getting up, getting ready, going to work, etc...but in the video games he had to think about every move and every action before he had to do it. I've played the Sims before and it is extremely close to real life. You have to control all of every character's moves, wishes, dreams, food intake, and cleanliness. For him his "relationships" in the video games were failing just like they were in his real life. I, for one, think that that's pathetic. I don't like how now a days guys sit there and play video games for 12 hours every day, don't go outside, don't socialize, and just sit in their houses all day and veg out by their tv/computer. I hate it. Video games are ok to play occasionally, I'm not going to lie, I like to play a bit of Resident Evil from time to time, but I don't sit in my house all day at all hours playing it. I'll play maybe once every couple months, if that. This article wasn't my favorite but it was interesting to read the perspective of the gamer.

The horror movie article was interesting. It was just a compilation of all of the different original horror movie originals and remakes. I haven't really seen a lot of horror movies but I do enjoy them when I do get a chance to watch them. The beginning of the article describes how Psycho is a good movie to just pass the time to. That it doesn't scare anyone anymore. But back in the day, it was one of the scariest movies. I think that now a days the younger generations are so desensitized to horror, blood, gore, weapons, and murders that it takes an awful lot to scare us. The movies discussed in this article are all remakes, so when it came time to remake them they had to take into consideration the audience that was going to be watching them. The author of this article just basically explains how each horror movie is characterized. Today this is important because of the standards that people have on these kinds of movies. If it's a bad horror movie, it most definitely will not make it big.

All three of these articles were extremely different from one another. However, the last two had some similarities. Video games are a part of the desensitization process of younger generations. The zombie games and the war games make it so horror movie producers have to work that much harder to keep the attention of their audiences. If it weren't for video games being so graphic, then horror movies would be like the old Psycho still. I think that it takes a lot to make a good horror movie and to make it good. Video games are along the same category as well. They both have such high standards today so a good game or movie is what makes audiences happy.

First Blog

For my first reading I read "Changing as a Writer". This article reminded me as somewhat of a free writing form. She seemed to ramble on about some of the same things a lot of the time. I did like how she compared her writing to math, however. I could relate to her in the fact that I feel like I also have a harder time expressing my feelings and emotions on paper. I can better just put down the facts rather than expressiveness and emotion.

The "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" set of readings really cracked me up. I didn't read all of them but of the ones I did they really were funny. My sister also got to reading them and liked them as well.

My last reading was "The Writing" and I thought it was long and a bit dry. But it was the example of a comp writing. I think I will be able to do pretty well with a comp writing. I don't enjoy writing but I have done well with all the writings that I have had to write for school. Research is more of my strong point more so than personal narratives.

The short film/lecture that we had to watch I agree with him in that technology has changed dramatically over the past 100yrs or so. I think that people today wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they didn't have the internet, twitter, facebook, or sites like this for example.
